Top tips for beginners

Get the right gear
Before hitting the slopes at Tūroa, make sure you're equipped with the right gear. You'll need skis, boots, and poles OR a snowboard and boots. The right clothes are essential, layer up for comfort with a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Don’t forget gloves, a beanie, and goggles—even on sunny days! We always recommend a helmet, it keeps you safe and is a great way to stay warm.
Take a lesson
Skiing and snowboarding might feel challenging at first, but taking a lesson from one of Tūroa’s certified instructors will boost your confidence and teach you the basics. Its the best way to make the most of you time at the mountain and really enjoy your day.
Hydrate and rest to keep going strong
Skiing and snowboarding can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay hydrated and take breaks during your day on the mountain. The high altitude and cold temperatures can quickly dehydrate you, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Take breaks to warm up, stretch, and drink water. Pacing yourself will keep you energised and able to keep going for longer.
Know your limits
It’s tempting to push yourself on the slopes, but knowing when to take a break is key—especially if you're a beginner. Pay attention to your body. Are you feeling tired or losing focus? The slopes will still be here tomorrow! Rest up, and return the next day ready to tackle more challenges.
Enjoy a soak after a day on the slopes
Skiing and snowboarding work muscles you didn’t even know you had! After a day on the mountain, booking a hot tub to relax your muscles is the perfect way to recover and get ready for another adventure. Ohakune offers a few great spots to unwind and soothe those muscles including Ohakune Hot Tubs and the Snowman Lodge & Spa.
