Where is Tūroa?
Centrally located in New Zealand's North Island, Tūroa Ski Area is located on the southwestern side of Mount Ruapehu. Ohakune is the gateway to Tūroa, a charming mountain village with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and accommodation options.
Estimated drive times to Tūroa Ski Area:
- Ohakune: 25 mins
- Waimarino (National Park): 50 mins
- Tūrangi: 80 mins
- Whanganui: 1 hour 45 mins
- Taupō: 2 hours
- Hawkes Bay: 2 hours 45 mins
- Wellington: 4 hours
- Tauranga: 4 hours
- Auckland: 5 hours

Driving to & parking at Tūroa
The Ohakune Mountain Road is a 17km, tar-sealed road that connects Ohakune to Tūroa Ski Area. The drive usually takes 20 - 25 minutes.
Parking is free and conveniently located within walking distance of the chairlifts and base area. No booking is required, but note that the front row is reserved for our Platinum Pass holders.
On busy days, our friendly roads team will be happy to assist you in finding a park.
We offer designated accessible parking spaces. To ensure availability, please contact us in advance to reserve a spot and display your mobility parking permit on your windshield.
Winter weather can impact travel, so make sure to check the daily road updates on our winter snow report and take note of any updates on the sign at the bottom of the road.
On days with road restrictions, such as 'chains required', use of a shuttle is recommended.
Please take care while driving, and be aware of cyclists and hikers on the road.

No, we don't offer chain rental. There are some options in Ohakune for chain hire & purchase. (TCB ski board & bike Ohakune)
Parking is allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you have a season pass, you can upgrade to a Platinum Season pass, and this will guarantee you priority parking at the front of the top car park all season long.
